MACMILLAN PRIZE FOR ILLUSTRATION AWARDS 2022

DOTTY’S DAY OF WONDER SELECTED FOR THE DPICTUS UNPUBLISHED PICTUREBOOK SHOWCASE 4 – EXHIBITED AT BOLOGNA BOOK FAIR 2023

BIOGRAPHY

Moira Millman is an illustrator originally from Plymouth, now living in Cambridgeshire with her husband and young son. She graduated from Cambridge School of Art in 2022 with a Masters Degree in Children’s Book illustration gaining a Merit.

After graduating with a degree in illustration from Maidstone College of Art, she moved to London where she freelanced  for many years for editorial, advertising and publishing clients worldwide. A love for Mid Century design and illustration has always been a big influence on her work and her shelves groan under the weight of her collections!

A long held interest in picturebooks was reignited by the birth of her son and this led her to undertake the MA at Cambridge School of Art. Whilst on the course, she has developed her own playful picturebook texts and through these stories, she aims to encourage children to be creative and curious about the world around them.

Pencil and paper are her favourite materials and she combines her drawings with print textures and patterns to create bold graphic artwork in Photoshop. Colour has always been a strong feature of her illustration practice, and in her latest work she has enjoyed exploring the use of limited colour palettes to evoke a screenprinted technique.

When not at her desk she can be found rummaging at car boot sales for vintage treasures, watching technicolor movies and reading artist and musician biographies.

She also delivers illustration, printmaking and art workshops for children and has visited schools to show her work and set a creative activity for the students.

She is passionate about encouraging children to be creative and curious about the world around them and to develop their ideas and critical thinking skills.
